Chapter 13

As Hades approached his bedroom, storms raged through his mind.

Petitions had been particularly difficult this month, especially because of that one idiot soul. Hades hated him. Hated that nameless soul with a deep, abiding passion. Truly, how could anyone be so much of an idiot?

When the man’s wife, a sweet, plump woman, had arrived in the Underworld several years earlier, she had kneeled at the foot of his throne and, with tears in her eyes, begged him to keep her deceased husband away from her. In life, he’d been the vilest of abusers, according to her testimony, and in death, she feared he’d be much the same.

If he could, Hades would throw the man in Tartarus and walk away with a smile. His conscience would be clear, but unfortunately, that wasn’t how things worked. Instead, as per the law of the Underworld, each time the man petitioned to see his wife, Hades had to alert the woman, in her home in Asphodel.

It wasn’t good for her healing, to be told of his callous petitions month after month, year after year, but until Hades regained his power and was able to change the law, he was obliged to continue.

The woman was wholly aware that her husband was not allowed to contact her in any way unless she consented to it, but she was still afraid.

The situation always inflamed his temper, reminding him of his uselessness in his condition.

Before entering his chambers, Hades leaned against the wall and took a few breaths, trying to calm himself. Destina was inside. He could feel her essence, her life force, on the other side of the wall. She waited for him. The thought brought that curious warmth back to his chest.

She had kissed him this morning, of her own volition, and what a kiss it had been. Hades could still feel the slip of her little tongue against his, and the way her nails scratched lightly against his scalp.

I may be lucky enough to earn another.

The thought emboldened him. Would she consent to kiss him again tonight? He wouldn’t know until he saw her.

Walking into his room, he caught sight of Destina almost immediately. She sat on the carpet in front of the fireplace, cheery flames dancing within it. “Are you cold, little dove?” Hades asked her, lifting the laurel from his head and placing it on a nearby table. Destina was slow to turn, but when she finally did, something was different. “Is something the matter?” He asked, unsnapping the bejeweled cuffs from his wrists.

“I-I’m not feeling so well tonight,” she stuttered, her voice weak and reedy.

On instinct, he approached, whether to give comfort or aid he did not know, but she held up a hand to stop him. Hades froze, his concern warring with confusion. “Destina?”

She placed her shaking hand flat against her chest. “I think I’m going to be sick,” she croaked, moving clumsily to her feet and running to the bathroom.

As soon as he heard the door slam, Hades sprung into action, trying to reach her.
